We often hear the term “the last romantic” used to describe Hungarian pianist and composer Ernő Dohnányi. Dohnányi was a musician who, both in his younger years and at the end of his career, never refused experimentation and expressed keen interest in unusual musical solutions. Let us take his ‘Ariafor Flute and Piano’, written in 1958, as an example. The piece’s airy, French character is very close to Debussy’s art. According to an analyst of Dohnányi’s work, “it is perhaps no exaggeration to compare the circular flute melody, and the form built on the serial return of themes and motifs to ‘Predule à l’après-midid’un faune’”. Written more than half a century earlier for string trio, ‘Serenade’is one of Dohnányi’s earliest masterpieces, in which he experimented with something that no one since Beethoven dared to attempt. And speaking of Beethoven: Hungarian composer György Orbán’s musical composition entitled ‘Album Pages’, written with wry humour, takes its audience back to a bygone era, perhaps to Beethoven’s time, and even perhaps to an era that exists only in the imagination.
