ADVENTUROUS. HUMOROUS. INTELLECTUAL.

Haydn’s ‘String Quartets’ (Op. 20), premiered in 1772, presents a decisive moment in the composer’s career, and it also constitutes a significant milestone in the history of the genre of string quartet. This time, the fantastic fugue finale of the ‘String Quartet in C Major’ constitutes a highlight not only to Haydn’s work, but also to the third evening of the chamber music series ‘Variations’. This chamber evening will also stage works by composers who were in close connection with Haydn: for example the concert will feature a finely textured violin and viola duo by Mozart and a flute trio by Hummel, who succeeded Haydn in his musical role at the estate of the Hungarian Duke of Esterházy.
