The instrumental skills of Jean Barrière, who was a French composer and cellist and a contemporary of Bach, are unsurpassed. Barrière published several volumes of sonatas for cello, which outshined the musical literature of the period with their extremely high technical features and musicality, both of which proved the composer’s refined taste. François Devienne was a flute and bassoon player and a leading teacher figure at the contemporary Paris Conservatoire. The works of these two French composers are not only highly enjoyable but also provide valuable lessons to the ear when they are listened to in the context of these masters’ most distinguished contemporaries.
