Though this is not achieved through subtle restraint: the film is grotesque, at times dark and bordering on morose, at other times disconcertingly risqué. Its bravery is what makes this work still alive and relevant today. With its royal court full of intricacies and strange figures, it remains familiar to us despite the passing of the years.
